The main component of smithsonite is formed in the weathering of secondary minerals or oxidation zone of zinc-bearing deposits, and sometimes it may form zinc ore instead of carbonate rocks. Zinc carbonate is used as a light astringent to prepare calamine, skin protector and latex products.

Zinc carbonate is used as a skin protector in medicine, as a zinc supplement in feed, as a light astringent and latex product in industry, as well as the preparation of calamine lotion. It can also be used as the main raw material of desulfurizer and catalyst in the production of rayon and fertilizer industry, and also widely used in rubber products, oil paint and other chemical products. In oil drilling, this product can react with H2S to produce stable insoluble ZnS, Moreover, this product will not affect the mud performance after adding mud, so it can effectively eliminate H2S pollution and corrosion, and be used as corrosion inhibitor and sulfur removal agent for H2S containing oil and gas wells. It is used in EVA foaming industry to achieve uniform foaming and alleviate the effect of AC.
