Tongkat Ali, scientifically known as Eurycoma ***, is a plant belonging to the bitter wood family. This wild shrub plant thrives in the primitive tropical rainforests near the equator in Southeast Asia, particularly in countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
Referred to as Malaysian ginseng and native ginseng in its original habitat, Tongkat Ali grows in moist sandy soil and takes over 5 years to mature. The tree can reach a height of 4-6 meters, with some specimens reaching up to 12 meters. The trunk diameter ranges from 8-10 centimeters, with the thickest measuring 15 centimeters. Its branches are minimally branched, and the leaves form an umbrella shape at the top.
Tongkat Ali contains various beneficial compounds, including triterpenoids with a quassinoid skeleton, β-carboline alkaloids, coumarin, and lignans.
