Tagatose is a rare monosaccharide that occurs naturally and is the ketose form of galactose, the epimer of fructose. The sweetness properties are similar to sucrose, and the calories produced are only one-third of sucrose, so it is called a low-calorie sweetener. Tagatose has excellent nutritional properties such as low calorie value, zero glycemic index, blood sugar passivation, no caries, prebiotic effect and antioxidant activity.
In 2001, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has confirmed the safety of tagatose and approved it as a GRAS product, which can be used as a sweetener in the food and beverage industry and pharmaceutical preparations. In the same year, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization Joint Committee on Food Additives recommended tagatose as a new low-calorie sweetener that can be used as a food additive.
1. For food The safety and production of tagatose have been approved by more than 30 countries including China, the European Union, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, as well as WHO/FAO and the Codex Alimentarius Commission, and its daily intake and use Use is not limited.
2. For medicine Tagatose has completed phase III clinical trials for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and preclinical trials for anti-triglycerides authorized by the US FDA.
3. Other purposes Tagatose has been approved by the US FDA as a pharmaceutical excipient for throat lozenges, over-the-counter diabetic cough syrup, chewable antibiotic tablets, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and pediatric drugs. US FDA approves tagatose to replace sucrose and other sweeteners in toothpaste, mouthwash and cosmetics.
