4-methylmorpholine N-oxide, also known as NMO or NMMO, is an organic compound. NMO is commercially available in the form of its monohydrate and anhydrate. NMMO monohydrate is used as a solvent for cellulose in the Lyocell process to produce cellulose fibers. Cellulose is insoluble in most common solvents due to its strong and highly structured network of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. NMMO, on the other hand, is able to disrupt the hydrogen bond network that makes cellulose insoluble in water and other solvents, such as mixtures of lithium chloride containing cellulose in dimethylacetamide and some hydrophilic ionic liquids.
