N-acetyl-L-cysteine is an organic compound with a chemical formula of C5H9NO3S, a white crystalline powder with a garlic-like smell and a sour taste. It is hygroscopic and easily soluble in water.
NAC, namely N-Acetyl-L-cysteine (N-Acetylcysteine), Chinese name N-acetyl-L-cysteine (acetylcysteine), is a thiol-containing An antioxidant that can increase the free radical scavenger of the cell pool, and is also a mucolytic agent. The principle of action is that it can break the disulfide bond (-S-S-) of the peptide bond of mucin, making mucin into a small molecule peptide chain, relaxes and removes the viscosity of sputum. NAC has equivalent functions to glutathione, both have antioxidant properties based on sulfhydryl functions, and both can protect the body from peroxidative stress damage caused by septic shock. NAC can inhibit neuronal apoptosis, but can also induce smooth muscle cell apoptosis. NAC also inhibits HIV replication and acts as a substrate for microsomal glutathione transferase (GST).
